Welcome to part two of Caster Wheels 101. This course will give you a better understanding on wheel selection.
There is vast choice of wheel size and material offerings. The key to choosing the right one is to understand your customer’s application and the environment they will be used in.
Pneumatic
Pneumatic wheels
– Air filled tires with an all terrain tread.
Flat Free
– Look and act like a Pneumatic wheel, but do not require air.
Provide a cushioned ride and can be used on all types of terrain.
Weight capacities are fairly low compared to other materials.
Typically used on hand trucks and studio equipment.
Wheel Bearings
Plain Bore
– No bearing, axle rolls directly on the wheel.
– Least expensive option, but harder to roll.

Delrin Bearing
– Acetyl self lubricated bushings which are used as a lower cost alternative to stainless steel in wash down applications.

Precision Ball Bearing
– Sealed ball bearings that provide a smooth ride and make it easier to roll.

Roller Bearing
– Needle bearings used in heavy duty applications. Can hold heavy loads, but are not as easy to push compared to precision ball bearings.

Tapered Roller Bearing
– Used in heavier duty or higher speed applications
– Provide great radial and thrust loads
